It stars Riley Keough, Jaeden Martell, Lia McHugh, Alicia Silverstone, and Richard Armitage. The project was announced in October 2017, Riley Keough joining the cast of the film, with Franz and Fiala directing from a screenplay they wrote alongside Sergio Casci. Much of the cast joined that February 2018 and principal photography began in March 2018 and wrapped that same month. It had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 25, 2019, and was released on February 7, 2020, by Neon. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with many praising the performances, direction, and screenplay, as well as the horror elements. Plot [ edit] Richard Hall, an investigative writer, informs his wife, the devout Catholic Laura, that he wants a divorce following their extended separation so he can marry Grace, a young woman who was the sole survivor of her father's fundamentalist Christian cult who committed a mass suicide; Richard and Grace met while he was writing a book on the cult. Laura subsequently commits suicide, which devastates the couple's children, teenage Aidan and young Mia. Six months later, Richard announces to his children at Thanksgiving that they will spend Christmas together with Grace at the family's remote Massachusetts lodge to get to know each other. That night, Aidan and Mia access their father's computer and uncover Grace's past, including disturbing video footage of the cult, showing each of the deceased followers draped in purple silk with a strip of duct tape across their mouths reading "Sin". Several days before Christmas, the four arrive at the lodge, where the children act openly hostile toward Grace and refuse efforts to bond with them. When Richard departs back to the city for a work obligation, the children continue to act abrasively toward Grace, often completely ignoring her. Grace's stress is compounded by the abundance of Catholic iconography in the cabin, which causes her to have nightmares about her father. Tensions rise after Grace catches Aidan watching her shower; after being reprimanded, Aidan appears to soften, and one night prepares her a cup of cocoa while she and Mia watch movies. In the morning, Grace awakens to discover that her belongings—including her clothing, psychiatric medication, and dog—are missing. The food has also disappeared from the cabin, as well as Christmas decorations she put up the day before. The generator has gone out, leaving their cell phones dead. Grace suspects the children have pranked her, but finds their belongings are missing as well. She notices the clocks in the house have advanced to January 9th. A tearful Aidan tells Grace that he dreamed a gas heater in the living room malfunctioned and they all suffocated, and expresses his fear that they may in fact be dead. Over the following several days, Grace—succumbing to anxiety, medication withdrawal, hunger, and cold—begins sleep walking, and is tormented by disturbing visions and dreams, including the recurrent voice of her father sermonizing. She attempts to walk to the nearest town, and discovers a cross-shaped cabin where she sees her father beckoning to her from inside; she eventually travels in a circle which takes her back to the lodge. Buried in the snow, she discovers a photo of Aidan and Mia in a memorial frame, and inside, finds the children frantically praying over a newspaper article detailing the deaths of all three from carbon monoxide poisoning on December 22nd. Aidan hysterically insists they are in purgatory, and appears to hang himself in the attic—which he survives—as proof that they are dead. Grace suffers a nervous breakdown, which intensifies when she finds her dog frozen to death outside. She then enters a catatonic state on the porch. Worried she might die of exposure, the children finally admit to Grace that they have been gaslighting her the entire time, having drugged her, hidden their possessions in a crawlspace, and played recordings of her father's sermons at night via a wireless speaker; Mia has been calling Richard daily so he will not suspect something is wrong. With their own phones dead at last, the children unsuccessfully attempt to start the generator and bring Grace her medication, but find her wholly convinced they are in purgatory and must do penance to ascend to heaven. That night, the children find Grace burning herself on the hearth. They barricade themselves in the attic, but are confronted by Grace in the morning, who insists they must "sacrifice something for the Lord. " Richard returns shortly after to discover an inconsolable Grace brandishing his pistol. In an attempt to prove her belief that they are in purgatory, she fires the gun at him, killing him. Aidan and Mia attempt to flee in the car, but get it stuck in the snow. Grace forces the children back into the lodge, where she seats them at the dinner table with their father's corpse and sings " Nearer, My God, to Thee. " She then affixes pieces of duct tape reading "sin" to each of their mouths before contemplating the gun. Cast [ edit] Production [ edit] In October 2017, Riley Keough joined the cast of the film, with Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala directing from a screenplay they wrote alongside Sergio Casci. FilmNation Entertainment and Hammer Films produced and financed the film. [4] [5] In February 2018, Jaeden Martell, Richard Armitage and Lia McHugh joined the cast of the film, with production beginning that same day. Katelyn Wells signed on to the film at the beginning of March 2018, and began work on the project the very next day. [6] Release [ edit] The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 25, 2019. [7] Shortly after, NEON acquired distribution rights to the film. [8] The film was originally scheduled to be released in the United States on November 15, 2019, [9] but it was delayed until February 7, 2020, when it was given a limited release in Los Angeles and New York City. [10] [11] The theatrical release expanded to 320 theaters in the United States on February 21, 2020. [2] Critical response [ edit] The Lodge holds an 73% approval rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 142 reviews, with a weighted average of 7. 03/10. The site's consensus reads: "Led by an impressive Riley Keough performance, The Lodge should prove a suitably unsettling destination for fans of darkly atmospheric horror". [12] On Metacritic, the film holds a rating of 64 out of 100, based on 29 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". [13] Dennis Harvey of Variety wrote that " The Lodge may be best taken on the same terms as ’60s/early ’70s Italian giallos, with their somewhat random manipulations of plot and character logic in service of atmospheric shocks. Genre homage does not appear to be an intention here, but the film is certainly at its best in fostering a sense of stylish dread and orchestrating some harrowing individual sequences. " [14] Brian Tallerico of echoed a similar sentiment, deeming the film "a truly unsettling movie, the kind of horror film that rattles you on an almost subconscious level, making you more uncomfortable than going for cheap scares. Don’t ask questions or dissect the believability of the plot. Just check in. " [15] References [ edit] ^ "The Lodge". Sundance Film Festival. Retrieved December 15, 2018. ^ a b "The Lodge". I came in and thought this is going to be a 'sinister, paranormal' type of a horror movie (according to the unreliable trailer) but it turned out to be a psychological thriller that rattled me.
All through the movie i was trying to realize what is this dark entity that is haunting the characters. Then it turned out to be nothing but a faux that shocked me.
I liked this film. It was definitely a nice experience watching it. But during the watch i was so confused on what was going on. If this is what the creators intended to do by making this film then very good job. But I feel that that confused feeling is kind of what made this film not as good as I wanted it to be.
Other than that- great making. Photography is good and the main atmosphere this film has is a character on its own.
It's a dream and thats the mall from Stranger things right. Maz jobrani love him. This and Something About Me are the most underrated songs on the show. Looks lots like Disneyland Paris. Something went wrong, but don’t fret — let’s give it another shot. Bond doesn't drive Ford because he's a degenerate. Henry Ford II. Disney is better. I want a DVD of season 1 pls... The Lodge is a horror drama as Hereditary or Midsömmar. The Lodge was produced by three countries The United Kingdom, Canada and The United States, a good and insane script, a great art direction, amazing performances and direction. The film shows how cruel can be a children, how insane can be a deeply religious person and don't mess with a disturbed person. The lead actress Riley Keough is an awesome actress playing a sadly character with many changes. The problem is the last minutes, a predectible ending.

Start your review of The Lodge. 10/22/2018 Thoroughly enjoyed a ladies getaway this past weekend at The Lodge in Cabin D1; because there were three of us, the larger cabin would be best for the next time around (which there will be). With that written, for two people, cabin D1 is the best option. Yes, it's small but how much time is spent indoors when one is in Woodstock and it's rustic because you're in the woods! Loved our porch though (highlight of this cabin) and the bedding was just like home (happy sleeping). Food was absolutely delicious. They have an amazing chef at the Harvest! She whips up delightfully delectable dinners and her specials sell out by nights end. Staff/owners were fabulous. Beth is a beautiful treasure of a human being and Jonathan is a complete doll. Truly a delightful, helpful, patient and forgiving staff all the way around. Already looking forward to planning our next trip up and hope to bring many other friends around this way. Great two hour drive from New York and fits into anything planned, it could be a romantic significant other weekend, a solo retreat or a friends time away for some fun and it's a ten minute walk into town. My only critique would be that brunch should be served, so opening the bar/restaurant portion of their establishment earlier in the day on the weekend would entertain the patrons staying on their grounds and perhaps bring in locals too? As silly as it sounds, a cup of hot cocoa on a cold night by the fire pit would have been that one more star worthy for five. So, I guess that critique can be included with the former =) But all in all, I am wholeheartedly in love with The Lodge. Comment from Beth B. of The Lodge Business Owner 10/26/2018 Thank you Alessandra for your detailed review and for choosing The Lodge for your ladies getaway! We really enjoyed hosting you and your friends. Your critique is very valid to offer brunch and we've been in discussion to offer brunch next season. Staffing can be challenging in Woodstock but not impossible and we're constantly pushing ourselves to improve our guest's experience. We're looking forward to hosting you again! Read more 2/9/2019 This review is for Harvest only. We loved everything about it. I was weary at first cause we were the only people there at 7:30 on a Friday night and by the time we were done there was 2 more tables seated. That's it. But don't let that persuade you. Our server was personable and charming without being annoying. He was fantastic. The food is awesome. We started with the perogies and my husband got the duck special and i got the cauliflower risotto. The duck was absolute perfection and the risotto was out of this world. And the prices weren't overly outrageous. So cozy and quaint. 39 friends 235 reviews 9 photos 2/28/2019 We recently returned from a 1 night stay. For what we ended up paying in February, this was simply not worth it. As we have a service dog we had to pay extra. We have stayed at many hotels before (that had lobby's, rugs, elevators, etc... ) and have never, ever had to pay extra for a service dog. But we had to here. The bar/restaurant was never open, and there was no breakfast whatsoever. I understand it's down time in Woodstock this time of year. But don't charge us based on what we should get, and don't receive. Yes the room was nice for summer, but totally not worth the $$ in winter. Too bad, as we will return to this area come summertime. And won't get fooled again! 0 friends 41 reviews 31 photos 1/24/2019 Booked (over 1 month in advance) a king sized bed with a fireplace, wanted a cabin alone. Got into the room and it's a full sized bed, no fireplace, and paper thin walls where I could here the neighbors talking. Called the front desk, was told that room was having "pipe problems" and wasn't available even at the time we booked it, he would speak to the manager about what he could do for us. After 2 days and no response I followed up. Finally the best they could do was 50% off dinner. But as we're getting ready, the water was brown and full of sediment. Called to cancel dinner because I wasn't eating in a place cooking with this water, not even an apology, just told to let the water run. I was told repeatedly that the room we did have was nicer, as if that makes up for the fact that it was the exact opposite of what I booked. They didn't even acknowledge it when we checked it. Extremely disappointing experience. Poorly managed and rude. STAY AWAY!!!! 12/19/2018 A new chef from the Wolfgang's at the Four Seasons. Excellent food and great service. Get the duck or strip streak with asparagus. One of the best dinners in Woodstock. 127 friends 38 reviews 1 photo 9/29/2018 Bar had a nice vibe, but the room was quite rustic and small, no phone, an electric baseboard in the bathroom for heat. Expected a cabin, there were three units in our little building, and walls were thin. Looked maintained, but also quite dated and old. For the price I was not impressed. Breakfast was included and was good. 6 friends 18 reviews 5 photos 11/20/2018 We loved the Woodstock Lodge. We stayed for a quick two day October getaway. The lodge is unique because all the "suites" are in cabins with a few suites per cabin. We had the opportunity to stay in an updated original cabin and a newly built modern cabin. Both were equally charming but if given the choice again we would definitely stay in one of the newly built cabins as the amenities (heated bathroom floor! )were perfect for our needs. Michael and Beth were super friendly, hands on, and very responsive to questions. Breakfast selections in the mornings were plentiful and perfect to get the day going. One a delicious burger to the lodge menu!! We will definitely stay again. 2 friends 4 reviews 9 photos 9/28/2018 Spent a weekend at the Lodge in early September. Stayed in one of the renovated cabins and enjoyed the delicious food served at the Harvest. We had drinks and appetizers the first night. Ordered the tempura cauliflower and loaded nachos. Both were so delicious. It was so relaxing sitting on the outdoor patio with a bottle of prosecco. I couldn't stop raving about the two appetizers. The next night we decided to enjoy dinner inside. We ordered the mussels! I wanted to ask for a spoon to drink the broth. For dinner I had fish served over roasted corn and my husband had the steak. Everything is sourced locally and super fresh. Chef Samantha Fernandez is the real deal! What a lovely hidden gem in Woodstock. I recommend the restaurant highly. Perfect ending to a relaxing weekend. 90 friends 3 reviews 10 photos 7/8/2018 The Lodge is my favorite bar in Woodstock. I've lived in Woodstock since 1995, I am an upstate curmudgeon--I don't go out. Woodstock is a cute town but I am picky about where I hang. It's all about the vibes for me. The big outdoor deck has comfortable furniture, a fire table and is surrounded by relaxing woods. You feel like you are in the Catskills when you are at the Lodge. The food is great, the chef Sam, is from the Four Seasons in Long Island and has created a complete and fulfilling menu. Carnivores and vegetarians will both be happy eating here. Some of my favorites from the old menu have been: the Sesame tofu with charred bok cornish hen with mashed potatoes and caramelized, herbed carrots... and the ricotta hazelnut toast. All of it is soo good!! The bar makes its own fresh, organic ginger brew which they can use in many different ways for their drinks. Spoiler: the ginger brew is good in everything! When there is live music it's always fun, quality and affordable. It's makes the Lodge a casual, comfortable but classy place to relax and socialize. The hotel is also coming along nicely with new renovations to the cabins! The rooms are modern but naturally woodsy. Simple continental breakfast. The best thing about staying at the Lodge is a nice, new SALTWATER pool (awesome! ) and hot tub which doesn't exist at most places in this area. Besides all these things there is something very special about the Lodge and I enjoy it in any season of the year!! 3 friends 8 reviews 19 photos 10/4/2017 Rustic but cozy. Excellent hospitality from owners Johnathan and Brian. Definitely would come back and recommend. Bar and outdoor patio for socializing with great drink and food specials 621 friends 11 reviews 5 photos 7/27/2018 The Lodge is exactly the type of place that I expected all of Woodstock to be like. Friendly, awesome music, great drinks, right in the middle of the woods, locals who are welcoming and there for a good time. My boyfriend and I drove past a sign that said "karaoke night at The Lodge" and since it seems like everything in town is closed late night and early morning, we decided to spontaneously go there. I didn't catch the bartenders name, but he was so friendly and his drinks were on point. The Lodge seriously completed our trip with their good vibes. We were there for a quiet Thursday night, but i could only imagine how much fun this place is on the weekend or nights that they have a special band. My boyfriend announced it was my birthday when we sang a song for karaoke and the woman running the karaoke night played Happy Birthday by The Beatles afterwards. It was so nice of her to do that- again, everyone was so welcoming. We loved it so much that we are already going to book a room to stay in next year. 0 friends 54 reviews 5 photos 9/16/2018 Food was excellent! Appetizer was divine: watercress, burrata, cherry tomatoes and fresh figs, with caramelized sugar a top fresh figs, dressed delicately with light vinaigrette. Chilled cucumber soup with fresh corn and seared scallops was delicious! Corn so fresh, sweet and still had lovely, subtle crunch to it; tasted as though just picked. Very large scallops seared perfectly; perfect char and caramelization to them, tender in the inside. NY Strip Steak with chimichurri sauce, also cooked perfectly; perfectly charred and cooked medium, as requested. Juicy and tender. Service was EXCELLENT. Cleared all plates and silverware after every course as well as cleaned linen of all crumbs, etc. After every course asked how everything was and when served, told us "bon appetit". Decor rustic and quaint. Panoramic view of beautiful trees. 129 friends 25 reviews 1 photo 6/4/2018 We passed the "bar open till 4 a. m. " sign countless times. I think (in our heads) we assumed The Lodge was basically the biker bar from "Pee Wee's Big Adventure". (Not sure why. Just did. ) What we found instead was a hidden clearing in the woods. A great place to eat and drink and enjoy a thoroughly chilled out atmosphere-- away from the troubadours and tie dye of Tinker Street. In the 60's, this would have been known as a "hide-a-way". Rentable cabanas. Saltwater pool. Patio bar. 10-table restaurant. Sort of the Woodstock version of "Sole East" in the Hamptons. The Lodge is still figuring things out a bit. (A few Spotify playlists and outdoor speakers would go a long way. ) But some things seem very well sorted. Ice-cold martinis. Uber-friendly staff. And a simple but highly solid menu. (Don't miss the cauliflower. Just don't. ) If you have been ping-ponging between the "go-to's" (Sylvia. A&P. Cucina. repeat) then take the short drive down Country Club lane. 6/17/2018 Honestly this place is amazing. Customer service is clearly a priority from when you walk in until you leave. The restaurant is incredible. Do yourself a favor and order the tuna tartare. The bartender (Joe I think) not only curated a drink experience for us, but he was super thoughtful -- checked in to make sure we enjoyed it, created new drink options for us. Everyone was friendly. Also super nice heated saltwater pool and an awesome hot tub! 2/20/2019 Amazing! Clean, comfortable bed, super nice staff, and beautiful design. Right next to all of the attractions in Woodstock. Will definitely be back again. 10/21/2018 We ate dinner there. The food was excellent, the only negative thing I can think of was the service being a little slow. They could use more servers. We had a great time dancing. 10/26/2018 My husband and I recently stayed here for his birthday and the owners were so helpful! There were a couple issues at first which they handled promptly. We had the opportunity to stay in two different rooms, one in an older cabin and one in their newly built cabins. The older cabin had a strong smell of mold in the shower but otherwise was your basic cabin room. The room in the newer cabin had nicer amenities but the bed was so small, I honestly think it was a full. We were surprised to learn how incredibly thin the walls were, the family sharing the building had a baby and we could hear the baby's every cry the entire night. Although the lodge had a great bar menu and happy hour specials, the bar staff was less than friendly. We were looking forward to swimming in their heated pool and jacuzzi but when we went over, it looked like it had not been cleaned in weeks. Overall, I think the owners are still getting some kinks out and we hope to return down the road when they have renovated!! The property itself is in great proximity to downtown and the owners are ready to give great dining suggestions!! Comment from Beth B. of The Lodge Business Owner 10/26/2018 Thank you Chelsea for taking the time for writing a detailed review and choosing our place to celebrate your husband's bday! In the older/rustic cabin, we investigated the smell after reading your review. It's not mold but without trying to be gross-sometimes our older pipes need to be cleaned out every now & then from shower build up and we've remedied the issue. We apologize for the bar staff being less than friendly. We pride ourselves as a group on our friendliness and willingness to help give our guests a wonderful experience. The pool is cleaned daily, unfortunately weather & fall will leave a lot of leaves and sometimes debris in the pool. In the new building we actually paid extra for sound proofing and have had a discussion with our architect regarding your complaint. Unfortunately a baby crying did not give you and your husband a restful night sleep even with extra sound proofing.. We're working on alternative solutions. Our beds in the new building are all queen size from Casper but think when you go from a king size mattress (in your previous room) to a queen size mattress it can feel much smaller. We value your feedback and will continue to make improvements to our property and guest experience. We hope you you will come back to visit us again! Live music, great vibe and awesome people. Many celebs and rock stars too. The food is very good and changing always. So the variety is great. With evening specials in addition to the menu. If your in Woodstock this is well worth a visit. The bar is the latest open in town making the rooms the coup de gras. Check it out 6/6/2018 I absolutely love staying here. The rooms are beautiful and the staff are amazing. You can either eat and drink at Harvest (the restaurant on site) or go to one of the amazing restaurants in Woodstock and neither choice will disappoint you. You also never know when a famous musician will stop by and jam at the bar's open mic night! I'd highly recommend to anyone who wants a weekend escape from NYC!
