So as the school holidays comes to an end in Australia we finish off with yet another release of a children's film. The funny part is that it's a bit like a recipe, as it contains parts of all the other films I've reviewed already these summer holidays! You take the machismo of Playing with Fire, add the silliness of Farmageddon, plus a touch of heart from Frozen 2, not forgetting some funny one-liners from Jumanji, finish it off with some espionage from Spies in Disguise, garnish it with the child-friendly action of Star Wars and you have a perfectly satisfying film called My Spy. Mr. 9 and I ate it up (and reviewed it) last week when we saw it at Palace Nova cinemas!
JJ (Dave Bautista) is an undercover CIA agent who is not exactly inconspicuous. After a weapons deal goes horribly wrong he is assigned to surveillance duty with tech-specialist Bobbi (Kristen Schaal. Their job is to keep an eye on a mother and daughter who may be in danger if a global terrorist finds out where they live. But JJ isn't exactly qualified for surveillance duty and it's not long before he is caught out by clever 9 year old Sophie (Chloe Coleman) the girl he is supposed to be watching. The two work out an arrangement where Sophie won't tell her mum Kate (Parisa Fitz-Henley) that they are being watched, but only if JJ teaches Sophie how to become a spy. The two don't exactly get along but over time a friendship develops, much to the chagrin of Bobbi who knows that this is a serious breach of the CIA surveillance rules. But, as expected, trouble inevitably finds its way into Sophie and Kate's life and we are left to see whether the spy training that JJ gave this precocious 9 year old will succeed or fail spectacularly.
THE GOOD
For a film like this, with a storyline that has been done to death plenty of times before, I was actually surprised at how much I liked My Spy. But my enjoyment didn't come so much from former WWE wrestler Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Stuber) but the confidence and acting ability of kid actor Chloe Coleman (Big Little Lies. In a lot of these 'kids teaching adults to be kids' films the child usually comes across as bratty and unlikeable but Coleman finds a great balance of clever, likeable and entertaining which Mr. 9 and I really found appealing. Also when you have a great comedy support cast like Kristen Schaal (Gravity Falls, Toy Story 4) and Ken Jeong (The Hangover movies) the laughter also lifts a notch too.
Mr.9: I really liked Sophie in this film when she is learning to become a spy. The part where she keeps looking at the explosions behind her was really funny because JJ had to keep turning her head around.
THE BAD
Bautista seems to have found his niche in Hollywood at taking characters who are large, muscle-bound, meat heads with not much going on upstairs. Alongside professional comedians like Schaal and Jeong his comedic acting can sometimes be painful to watch as he tries to compete with them for laughs but comes across more forced than natural.
And for those of you looking for an action film this is not entirely the case with My Spy. Although it is bookended with big, action, set pieces it is more a romantic comedy as much of the film is taken up with telling the story of JJ's budding friendship with Sophie and finding a possible love interest with her mum, Kate.
Mr. 9: It got really boring in the middle because there was no action happening. The bad guy was there at the start and then disappeared until the end of the film. It seemed different from what the trailer showed.
THE UGLY
For those of you who are familiar with Dave Bautista you would know that he is bald up top. Yet for some unknown reason the hair and makeup team decided to either spray paint or put a toupee on top of his head which is jet black and extremely short. It looks so unnatural and left me staring at the top of his head for most of the movie. Somewhat in shock and somewhat in fascination I couldn't stop looking at this unusual follicle choice.
I didn't have high hopes for My Spy after seeing the trailer but walked out pleasantly surprised at how a completely unoriginal film could be so enjoyable. Bautista's charm and Coleman's likeability really carry this film above 'just another comedy. An enjoyable film to finish off the school holidays!
THREE AND A HALF TOUPEES OUT OF FIVE
Mr. 9: All the spy stuff was fun and the movie was also pretty funny although it had a lot of swearing for a 'PG' film. Three and a half out five.

The film had grossed $20. 5 million worldwide and received mixed to positive reviews from critics, with praise for its visuals and cinematography, as well as the horror elements and acting, but criticism for the film's pacing. Plot [ edit] A baby that everyone in the village found to be the most precious falls terribly ill one winter. Her father took her to see an enchantress, who removed the illness but left a power within the girl. As she grew older, people in the village went to the girl because she had premonitions of the future. Because she knew everything ended in death, she used her power to kill people, including her father. The child was taken into the woods to be left alone, but she lured other children to a grim fate. After their father's death, teenage Gretel ( Sophia Lillis) and her younger brother Hansel (Sam Leakey) are going to meet a man about a job as a housekeeper. Gretel meets with the man, but he makes his true intentions clear when he asks Gretel if she is still a virgin. The two leave without a job. At night, the siblings' mother rebukes Gretel for not doing what she had to do to get a job and help provide for them. She tells Gretel that she and Hansel must leave because there is no room left in the house. The mother goes as far as threatening to hack Gretel to bits if they don't leave immediately. The siblings flee their home and find a hut to sleep in for the night. Suddenly, a ghoulish man arises and lets out a horrible scream and makes the kids run away. He chases them outside and attacks Hansel. Before he can get to Gretel, he is killed with an arrow to the head. A hunter ( Charles Babalola) rescues the siblings and takes them into his home for the night and directs them toward others who can provide them with food and work. The following morning, the siblings go outside to forage and seek work. They get frustrated when they find nothing until Gretel spots some mushrooms. They turn out to be "magic" mushrooms that cause the two to laugh hysterically. Hansel then wanders until he finds a house that has a cake smell coming from it. Gretel follows as she hears what sounds like a girl's voice beckoning her, seen alongside The Beautiful Child being taken away in a carriage. Gretel tries to stop Hansel from going inside, but he goes anyway and appears to be taken by someone. Gretel tries to start a fire to break inside, but she is greeted by Holda ( Alice Krige), the woman living inside. She invites the siblings inside for a meal and allows them to sleep there in exchange for work. Holda has Hansel go out into the woods to practice his skills with an axe, while she keeps Gretel at the house. Hansel enjoys his time there because they have plenty of food, but Gretel becomes suspicious of Holda's intentions. Gretel starts to see a vision of the Enchantress and hears children's voices guiding her somewhere, but before she finds out what's going on, she wakes up in her bed. While Hansel goes out, Holda shows Gretel how to tap into her powers as a witch. Gretel goes into the woods and manages to use her power to bring a tree branch near her so she can take a fruit. Meanwhile, Hansel also sees a vision of the Enchantress and spots a satanic carving on a nearby tree. Hansel starts to grow suspicious of Holda. Later in the night, Gretel makes her way into Holda's cellar where Hansel is sitting in a trance. Suddenly, the floor fills with goo, and a younger witch emerges, emptying buckets of guts onto the table before turning them into food, the same that Holda fed the siblings. The next day, Gretel sits with Holda, who eats something and pulls a long strand of a child's hair out of her mouth. Gretel pleads with Holda to let Hansel go, but she refuses. Through a series of visions, she tells Gretel the truth about the story of the Beautiful Child: Holda was the girl's mother, and she resented her daughter after she killed her father, and she left the girl in the woods of her own accord. However, the child lingered in Holda's mind, promising to share her powers with her if she trusted the darkness. With that, Holda devoured her other children and took on the disguise of an old woman to appear friendly and lure other children to their fates. Holda straps Gretel to a table in the cellar as she assumes her youthful appearance to lure Hansel into a cage so she can cook him. Gretel manages to use her powers to send a staff toward Holda, impaling her to the wall over the flames. Her body catches fire, and she cries in agony until she is dead, breaking the trance on Hansel and letting Gretel go free. The narrative slowly unravels like a novel as themes are explored through nuance and metaphor. The delicate dealing with love lost recalls Lee Chang-dong's Secret Sunshine and Céline Sciamma's Portrait de La Jeune Fille en Feu, regarding the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The cinematography, shot in a noticeably textured 35mm, is peculiar in the way it involves the setting and keeps us a certain physical distance from the characters. I think Michael Haneke would be proud of this film.
The central character Ingimunder's relationship with his granddaughter Salka serves the film in predictable but endearing ways. Strong child acting is often taken for granted, but Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir's performance is far from typical. It is also a testament to both fine direction (Hlynur Palmason) and strong casting because the two leads are almost irreplaceable and truly contribute to make the film something special.
A White, White Day is enriched by its simplicity and singularity as it takes on heavy themes. The characters are real, the story is thoughtfully restrained, and the ending is remarkable. One of the more memorable films of the year.

WHITE WHITE DAY tells a seemingly simple story, but is secretive at times, letting the viewers decide for themselves what motivates the characters. And it is often what happens off screen that has the real impact.
The cinematography however goes a bit overboard with still static shots of everchanging nature, as beautiful as they are they quickly turn irritating.
There are wonderful performances from all involved, specifically a tour de force from the lead Ingvar Siggurdson, as he slowly goes to pieces, his anger, pain and frustration tearing him apart on the inside, as he is just sitting there quietly like a bomb ready to go off.
WHITE WHITE DAY has a story to tell and has some interesting characters to match. It is, however first, and foremost an Arthouse film that tries to experiment with cinematography, light and pacing. It also relies on the viewer's attention, but it is a long, slightly depressing movie and not everyone will last the distance. But if you do it is rather rewarding.
Some movies hide the fact that they have little to say beyond the artistic impressions. WHITE WHITE DAY is not such a film.

Aunque, en realidad, dar con uno de los realizadores de videoclips más importantes de todos los tiempos es toparse con la silueta de Michael Hutchence como líder de INXS. Para ellos construyó buena parte de su mundo visual, desde "Burn Of You" (1984) hasta "Cut Your Roses Down" (1993), pasando por clásicos absolutos como los clips de "Need You Tonight", "Suicide Blonde", "By My Side" e incluso dos rodados en Praga en tiempos del comunismo: "Never Tear Us Apart" (con sus postales del Puente de Carlos y el cementerio judío de Josefov) y "New Sensation" (rodado en el bello edificio de la Obecni Dum de esa ciudad). Por eso, volver a la República Checa para Lowenstein es una grata experiencia que aquí concreta de la mano del Festival de Cine de Karlovy Vary, donde proyectó a sala llena su documental, para el cual con solo el título huelgan las explicaciones: Mystify: Michael Hutchence. El 22 de noviembre de 1997 Hutchence moría en la habitación 524 del Ritz Carlton Hotel de Sídney y la prensa comenzaría a hablar de una muerte por ahorcamiento durante un juego sexual sadomasoquista. Al respecto, Lowenstein es concluyente: "Tuve acceso a la autopsia y revela que no existió ningún juego sexual", confirma en diálogo con la nacion. -¿Cuánto tiempo le llevó hacer el documental? -La primera entrevista la hice en 2009 con Bono, de U2, cuando pasó por Melbourne durante una gira. Tengo una productora en esa ciudad y trasladé mi equipo al lugar de filmación, que era en la misma ciudad. Eso me permitió llevar una cámara y un sonido apropiados, y eso quedó muy bien. Pero en realidad yo estaba haciendo una investigación, porque pensé que iba a hacer un drama de ficción, no un documental. Cuando hice esa entrevista con Bono me di cuenta de que debía hacer otras más y entrevisté con la misma intensidad a los integrantes de INXS y al manager de la banda. -¿Cuándo el proyecto de ficción de la vida de Hutchence se convirtió en un documental? -Cuando estaba trabajando yo no era consciente sobre lo que estaba haciendo, hasta que se cruzó en mi camino un CEO de la Australian Broadcasting Corporation y me dijo: "¿Por qué no haces un documental sobre Michael? ". Y así comenzó todo. Entonces tuvimos que buscar financiación, conseguimos un productor inglés y fondos del gobierno y todo eso nos permitió poder rodarla. Fue un largo camino de cuatro años para conseguir financiación y tres para hacer la película. Dejé 500 horas de material considerando las entrevistas, el frondoso material de archivo, el material fotográfico y las filmaciones que Michael hacía todo el tiempo. Solo con un entrevistado era mucho tiempo, porque desde que llegaba la persona y decía "¡hola! " me llevaba cinco horas de entrevista. Una hora se iba solo en conocer a la persona, luego venía la clásica: "¿Cómo conociste a Michael? ", y después venían las lágrimas. Fue todo un tema. -¿Alguien no quiso dar su testimonio? -En realidad, no. Solo Helena Christensen fue la más difícil de entrevistar, pero nosotros teníamos un acuerdo, porque nos conocíamos de los tiempos en los que ella era la novia de Michael, y este era que ella iba a hablar hasta donde quisiera. Pero me pareció lo más comprensible, porque estuvo en el momento del accidente que cambió la vida de Michael para siempre. Un manager tampoco quiso hablar, intenté convencerlo, pero no quiso, y me pareció apropiado, porque su testimonio también significaba exponer a la banda en la historia. -Su documental sostiene que Michael Hutchence no se suicidó en medio de juegos sexuales de carácter sadomasoquista. ¿Cómo arribó a esa conclusión? -Llegué a esa conclusión por mí mismo, porque conocía a Michael muy bien, conocí a sus novias, y además porque pude acceder a la autopsia. No estoy de acuerdo con la teoría de que se ahorcó por un juego sexual porque entrevisté a muchas de sus compañeras y me confiaron su intimidad. Todas dijeron que le encantaba dar placer y que no había nada de ese tipo de juegos peligrosos y que era un gran amante. Veinte años después, cuando decido hacer la película, llamo a un periodista en Londres que tenía la autopsia. Yo quise buscar la causa de lo que pasó y tuve acceso a la autopsia, y revela que no existió ningún juego sexual, sino un daño en una zona del cerebro. El director Richard Lowenstein y Michael Hutchence, en los comienzos de la alianza entre INXS y el realizador de videoclips -¿Cómo es eso? -Mi conclusión es que fue, en efecto, un suicidio, pero porque tenía el cerebro dañado. Nadie se dio cuenta de ese daño. Michael tendría que haber hecho un tratamiento psicológico con supervisión y medicación. A eso le sumamos que estaba borracho y sin dormir. Además existe una llamada que le hace a Paula Yates veinte minutos antes, en la que le pide ayuda y que esté con él porque se siente solo, y eso no tiene nada que ver con un juego sexual. Además, con la autopsia consulté a un psicólogo experto en Sídney, que fue concluyente respecto de que no existe evidencia de un juego sexual ni nada parecido, sino del daño en el lóbulo frontal a causa del accidente que había sufrido años atrás y que le había hecho perder el sentido del gusto. -¿Cómo era trabajar en un videoclip de INXS? ¿Michael ponía condiciones? -Recuerdo que tenía completa libertad cuando trabajaba con él, no tenía ningún manager que me dijera qué hacer. Venía Michael y me decía: "Esta es la canción, haz lo que quieras hacer". Hicimos "Need You Tonight", que fue número uno absoluto. Me pidieron otros videos, pero yo vivía en Praga entonces y el manager no tenía idea de dónde quedaba Praga y mucho menos de que era en un país comunista: "No podemos ir a un país comunista a hacer rock, ¿quieres que acabemos todos presos? ", me dijo. Pero fue mi decisión mantenerme firme y Michael me apoyó muchísimo en eso. -La película tiene una ambivalencia entre el fervor y la nostalgia. ¿Fue un efecto buscado? -Fuimos muy autocríticos mientras la hacíamos, pero queríamos hacer una película desde la intimidad de Michael y que fuera hecha por gente que realmente lo conoció de manera personal. Mi plan era que, al verla, la gente sienta que está hablando íntimamente con Michael, y me ayudó mucho todo el material de cámara que él mismo rodaba domésticamente. -¿Qué piensa del nuevo cantante de INXS? ¿Es posible reemplazar a Michael? -Es imposible reemplazar a Michael, no estoy para nada a favor. Si Michael regresara y viera que alguien lo está reemplazando, entraría en shock. Pienso que lo más acertado hubiese sido cambiarle el nombre a la banda. Matthew Perry as Chandellar, o boy what a performance. The witty jokes and the sarcastic humor to go with the facial expressions and the body language, the best man for this particular character without doubt.
Matt Le Blanc as Joey, the extreme dumbness yet pulled off in such a lovable manner makes joey everyone's fav character on the show. I was shocked to see Matt Le Blanc performing so brilliantly.
Jennifer Anniston as Rachel, a runaway bride who is somewhat obsessed with her looks. Starts as an outlaw in the gang but smoothly becomes the integral part of the group. To this date Jennifer Anniston's best work in front of a camera.
Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe, no one else on the planet could have played this role as well as Lisa. A taboo figure in the gang, very weird, mysterious and in the moment. She provides the X-Factor to the gang with her bold antics.
Courteney Cox as Monica, an obsessive compulsive perfectionist. She provides the balance to the gang with her logical, reality based solutions. Courteney is another one who has performed out of her skin in this show.
If you have not seen this show, trust me you have deprived yourself of something truly magnificent. For once "great show" isn't an overstatement.
I have seen all 10 seasons about 10 times, even remember the dialogs in each episode :p. It is addictive, it is brilliant it simply is the best sit-com ever.
